Putin urges BRICS to combat climate agenda misuse
Russian President Vladimir Putin on Wednesday called on BRICS countries to counteract the misuse of the climate agenda to eliminate market competitors.
Speaking at an expanded format BRICS summit meeting, Putin emphasised the need for balanced approaches to transitioning the global economy to low-emission development models.
“We need to continue to jointly promote balanced approaches to issues related to the transition of the global economy to low-emission development models and in every possible way counteract attempts to use the climate agenda to eliminate competitors from the market,” Putin said.
Highlighting the importance for developing markets, he added, “This is especially true for developing markets. The BRICS contact group on climate and sustainable development is closely involved in all of this.”
Putin also expressed optimism about future initiatives, saying, “We consider the initiatives on the BRICS partnership on carbon markets and the climate research platform to be promising.”
