Remembering Egyptian artist Soad Hosny

Egyptian actress, singer, and poet Soad Hosny passed away the same day as today, 22 years ago.

Known as the “Cinderella of Egyptian cinema” she was one of the most influential and loved actresses in the Arab world.

Her career started in 1959 and ended in 1991, during which she starred in more than 83 films, nine of which ended up in the greatest 100 films in the history of Egyptian cinema.

She acted with a bunch of Egyptian film stars such as Omar Sharif, Rushdy Abaza, Salah Zulfikar, Shoukry Sarhan, Ahmed Mazhar, and more.

Some of her most notable works include Sunset and Sunrise, Whom Should We Shoot, Karnak which was based on Nobel Prize winner, Naguib Mahfouz, novel, and People on the Top.

Hosny died in 2001 after falling from the balcony of the Stuart Tower Building in Westminster, England.

Her death was surrounded with controversy and various claims as to whether it was a suicide or a murder.

Her body returned to Cairo and her funeral was attended by over 10,000 people.
