Scuffles in Aziz Al-Masri Precinct, Qalyoub

An intensive campaign came from Qalyoub police station, headed by the detective chief, to precinct no. 12 in Aziz Al-Masri School; due to a communiqué against candidate Ahmed Shafiq’s supporters who guide the people to their committees and urge them to elect him. The campaign removed the rest of the electoral propaganda for both candidates; Mohamed Morsi and Ahmed Shafiq.

Arguments erupted between the two sides and Morsi’s supporters started to chant slogans against Ahmed Shafiq. The campaign was able to control the clashes.

Egypt’s social housing, Banque Misr pact to boost real estate funding

The Social Housing and Mortgage Finance Fund and Banque Misr have recently forged a collaborative protocol aimed at bolstering real estate financing endeavours, as per a cabinet statement.

Suez Canal records $50.9bln revenues in 10 years

Egypt’s Suez Canal recorded the highest revenues in a decade in its history, reaching $50.9 billion in the period from 2013–2022, according to an official statement on Sunday.

The number of ships and vessels that crossed the canal during that period was 186,900. During the fiscal years 2021–2022, the canal recorded its highest yearly revenue of $7 billion.

In the first quarter of 2023, the Suez Canal recorded revenues of $2.30 billion, with a 35 percent year-on-year leap, the statement mentioned.

At the beginning of the year, the Chairman of the Suez Canal Authority (SCA), Osama Rabie, was expecting the canal’s revenues to hit $8.70 billion in 2023.

Egyptian Tax Authority names new chairman

The Egyptian Tax Authority (ETA) announced on Sunday that it has hired Fayez Al-Daba’ani as the new president of the authority. Al-Daba’ani is set to succeed Mokhtar Tawfiq after he reaches retirement age.

Al-Daba’ani held many positions and leadership positions in the tax authority, such as examination officer at the Shubra Al-Khaimah Tax Authority in 1991. He was also an inspector at the General Administration for Combating Tax Evasion in 1996.

He then became the director of the technical office of the head of the ETA in 1996. In 2010, he became the Director General of the General Department of Technical Studies in the Authority.

Al-Daba’ani’s recent role has been Head of the Central Administration for Tax Centre Affairs since mid-2022.

Egypt releases $23bln worth of imports since January

Egypt has released $23 billion worth of imported goods, merchandise and products since January, announced Minister of Finance Mohamed Maait on Monday.

Maait emphasised that the increase of the customs release process prioritised basic commodities, food manufacturing products, and pharmaceuticals.

He also said that Egypt is seeking to maintain the full operation of its production wheel as well as reducing importers’ burden by reducing fines and providing basic commodities to its citizens.

Egypt has an average monthly release of goods at customs outlets of $5 billion according to Maait. Egypt is currently developing its customs systems to meet the latest international standards to enhance investments.

Maait further explained that these measures have a goal of reducing storage costs at ports, to ease the pressure on importers and investors.

Egypt to regulate stray dogs, possession of dangerous animals

Egypt’s Agriculture and Irrigation Committee approved on Tuesday a draft bill to regulate possession of dangerous animals without license. In addition to measures to control the wide spread of stray dogs in the country.

The bill was drafted and introduced by member of Parliament Ahmed El-Sigini, chairman of the Local Administration Committee in the House.

El-Sigini explained the law by saying that “the draft law aims to address three issues: the problem of the spread of stray dogs in the streets, the possession of dangerous animals without a license, and other issues related to ownership of dogs.”

He also said that the bill is a step forward in a long-term strategy aiming to find a solution for the problem of the stray dogs.

Hospitals in 2022 face hundreds of injuries from dog bites in Egypt, including a number of deaths, said the Minister of Health and Population Khaled Abdel-Ghaffar last month.

“This problem is part of a worldwide phenomenon on the streets of many capitals” said El-Sigini. He also added that “we have to address it by setting up animal shelters and providing proper medical care for animals as other countries do.”
