Sisi, EU Parliament Chief push for Gaza ceasefire stability, stronger ties
Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi met Thursday with European Parliament President Roberta Metsola to discuss ongoing efforts to secure the Gaza ceasefire, expand cooperation between Egypt and the European Union, and address migration and regional stability, according to a statement from the Egyptian presidency.
Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi met Thursday with European Parliament President Roberta Metsola in Brussels to discuss efforts to sustain the Gaza ceasefire, deepen Egypt–EU cooperation, and tackle migration and regional stability, the Egyptian presidency said.
The meeting took place during Sisi’s visit to the Belgian capital for the first EU–Egypt Summit, a gathering that aims to strengthen political and economic ties between Cairo and Brussels.
At the start of the meeting, Sisi expressed appreciation for what he described as the European Parliament’s constructive role in supporting closer Egypt–EU relations. He emphasised the importance of moving forward with the recently launched Strategic Partnership Framework and enhancing coordination on regional and global issues of mutual concern.
Metsola, for her part, thanked Sisi for Egypt’s indispensable role” in mediating the ceasefire agreement in Gaza, saying it would not have been possible without Cairo’s active diplomacy.
“As a key partner for prosperity and stability in the Middle East and the wider region, we value Egypt’s leading and constructive role in the peace efforts in Gaza.” Metsola said in a post on X, formerly Twitter.

She reaffirmed the European Union’s commitment to a two-state solution as the foundation for lasting peace, according to the presidency statement.
Sisi reviewed Egypt’s broader regional efforts, including its mediation in the conflict and its hosting of the Sharm El-Sheikh Summit for Peace, which brought together international leaders to call for sustaining the ceasefire and scaling up humanitarian relief in Gaza.
Discussions also touched on migration, a recurring theme in Egypt–EU relations. Metsola praised Cairo’s success in preventing irregular migration from Egyptian shores since 2016. Both sides agreed to deepen cooperation by creating employment opportunities for Egyptian workers, expanding educational and training pathways in Europe, and advancing development projects aimed at addressing migration pressures at their source.
Metsola commended Egypt’s balanced and responsible approach to regional challenges, describing the country as a pillar of stability in the Middle East and the southern Mediterranean, the statement added.
Sisi, in turn, welcomed the European Parliament’s stance on the Gaza conflict and its call to end the fighting and alleviate civilian suffering. He underscored the need for coordinated Egyptian–European efforts to fully implement the ceasefire, ensure the steady flow of humanitarian aid, and begin reconstruction of the war-torn enclave.
Both leaders also welcomed Egypt’s plan to host the Cairo International Conference on Recovery, Reconstruction and Development of Gaza in November 2025.
