Sisi to receive Germany’s FM Heiko Maas in Cairo for regional affairs
Germany’s Foreign Minister Heiko Maas is scheduled to arrive in Cairo on Monday to discuss regional affairs with Egypt’s President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, the German Embassy in Cairo said.
Maas will visit Cairo on 27-28 October for meetings on regional issues on top of which are the crises in Libya and Syria, and bilateral ties with Egypt, according to the German Embassy’s statement.
He is also set to meet with his Egyptian counterpart Sameh Shoukry.
“Maas’ visit demonstrates the importance and strength of Egyptian-German relations. It comes within a series of high-level exchange visits, the latest being by German Chancellor Angela Merkel to Egypt in February 2019,” Germany’s Ambassador to Egypt Cyrill Nunn said.
The statement added that both countries, Egypt as the current chair of the African Union and Germany as a member of the United Nations Security Council, bear a major responsibility for, and have a common interest in, peace and security in the region.
Egypt and Germany enjoy strong relations in various fields, with trade exchange between the two countries estimated at 4.5 billion euros in 2018.
The German-Egyptian Developmental Cooperation portfolio is estimated at 1.6 billion euros, the statement said.
