Sony Mobile, the mobile device arm of consumer electronics giant Sony Corp. SNE +1.21% , is axing 149 jobs at its research and development center in Lund in southern Sweden.
The company, that recently broke its ties with Swedish network company Ericsson ERIC +1.16% to become a fully-owned unit of Sony, said the move is part of a restructuring program aimed to reduce costs announced in January.
The company will begin negotiations with unions and aims to complete the layoffs this spring.
Sony Mobile has some 7,000 employees globally with approximately 2,500 based in Lund.
