South Korea’s CPI edges down 0.1% in August

South Korea’s Consumer Price Index (CPI) stood at 116.45 (2020=100) in August 2025, decreasing 0.1 per cent from July and rising 1.7 per cent year-on-year, official data showed on Tuesday.

Excluding food and energy, the CPI was 112.84, down 0.6 per cent from the previous month and up 1.3 per cent from a year earlier.

By expenditure category, the monthly changes in August included:

  • Food and non-alcoholic beverages: +2.6 per cent
  • Housing, water, electricity, gas and other fuels: +0.2 per cent
  • Furnishings, household equipment & routine maintenance: +0.3 per cent
  • Health: +0.1 per cent
  • Transport: +0.4 per cent
  • Recreation and culture: +0.2 per cent
  • Restaurants and hotels: +0.2 per cent

In contrast, communication fell 13.3 per cent, while alcoholic beverages and tobacco, clothing and footwear, education, and miscellaneous goods and services remained unchanged from July.
