Spotify to launch more expensive subscription tier

Spotify is planning a more premium subscription option that might include high-fidelity (HiFi) audio, Bloomberg reported on Tuesday.

The tier, initially called Supermium, would be the streaming service’s most expensive plan and is set to launch this year in non-U.S. markets first.

Spotify is set to expand its premium subscribers’ access to audiobooks, either through a specific number of hours free per month or a specific number of titles, in order to boost its current premium tier.

The Swedish streaming service is set to launch the feature in the U.S. in October, following its introduction to foreign markets.

Spotify has been searching for ways to garner more subscribers as it faces competition with rival services like Apple Music and Amazon Music by trying out audio-focused services like the HiFi feature, which upgrades the sound quality of the songs to lossless CD-quality music.

The Spotify premium tier costs $9.99 monthly in the U.S., while a family account with six users is priced at $15.99 a month.
