Sudan boosts pledge as Africa seeks $25b for development fund

Sudan has boosted its pledge to the African Development Fund’s upcoming replenishment, committing $3 million, Finance Minister Gebreil Ibrahim Mohamed Fediel announced.

This support aligns with a broader call from African nations, led by the African Development Bank (AfDB), for a $25 billion replenishment to strengthen the Fund’s capacity.

During a meeting in Washington DC, AfDB President Akinwumi Adesina commended Sudan’s move as an “incredible show of solidarity” amid its challenges, emphasising that the additional funding is critical as the Fund aims to triple its resources by 2025. “ADF going to capital markets will help generate up to $27 billion additional resources starting from ADF 17th Replenishment,” he stated.

The African Development Fund’s current $8.9 billion cycle is the largest in its history, supporting crucial infrastructure projects across its 37 member countries.
