South Sudan and Sudan have made significant strides towards restarting the South Sudan’s crude oil through a pipeline to a port in Sudan, according to South Sudan’s finance minister and the president’s office.
Sudanese engineers have successfully completed the necessary technical preparations for the resumption of oil production, according to a statement from South Sudan President Salva Kiir’s office.
South Sudan’s economy has faced significant challenges in recent years due to communal violence and disruptions in crude oil exports. The civil war from 2013 to 2018 and the recent conflict in Sudan have significantly reduced South Sudan’s oil production.
Prior to the civil war, South Sudan was producing between 350,000 and 400,000 barrels per day of crude oil. The resumption of exports through Sudan could provide a much-needed boost to South Sudan’s economy.
