Suez Canal to Hike Transit Dues as of May 1st
Egypt’s Suez Canal Authority (SCA) on Saturday announced it would raise toll fees for all vessels passing through the strategic waterway starting on 1 May 2014, in an effort to boost government revenues currently suffering from an ailing economy.
A fee hike ranged between 0.7 – 5% will be imposed on LNG tankers, the press statement revealed, while dry bulk carriers’ toll fees will increase by 0.9-5%.
The canal is one of Egypt’s main sources of foreign currency revenue. Revenues hit $ 442.4 million in November 2013 after 1,428 vessels crossed the waterway carrying a combined cargo of 79.7 million tons.
