Egypt’s Dina Meshref reached the second round of the Olympic women’s table tennis singles following two successive wins over Nigeria’s Offiong Edem and Russia’s Yana Noskova at the 2012 London Games Saturday.
Meshref overcame Edem in the preliminary round, beating the Nigerian 4-2 (11-5, 2-11, 11-7, 10-12, 11-6, 11-3). She faced a sterner test in her next game but eventually emerged the winner.
She defeated Noskova 4-3 (12-10, 8-11, 4-11, 9-11, 14-12, 11-9, 11-9). Meshref will face Romania’s Elizabeta Samara in the second round on Sunday.
Fellow Egyptian Nadeen El Dawlatly, who was given a bye into the first round, could not join her compatriot after losing 4-0 to Denmark’s Mie Skov (9-11, 6-11, 7-11, 9-11).
