Two Banks attacked in Egypt’s Alexandria

Two banks were attacked by masked assailants in Egypt’s second city of Alexandria on Monday.

The first attack targeted a branch of the National Bank of Egypt in the Seyouf district east of the city using Molotov cocktails, leaving no injuries.

In the second incident, gunmen opened fire at a branch of the Emirati NBD Bank but didn’t injure or kill anyone at the scene. Another attack at the same bank occurred in February.

No attackers were caught and the reason behind the attack was not announced.

Mainly targeting police and army personnel and facilities since the ouster of Islamist president Mohamed Morsi, militants in Egypt have started targeted commercial enterprises, including mobile network outlets.

Outlets of the Emirati mobile network provider Etisalat were attacked before, mostly recently by a bomb on Thursday.

The United Arab Emirates is one of the main backers of Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi, who has asserted that such attacks are aiming to undermine a major economic conference Egypt is holding this week.
