The United States, which supports durable peace, used its veto power on Friday to draft the United Nations Security Council’s (UNSC) resolution calling for an immediate humanitarian ceasefire in Israel’s war on Gaza.
The veto power is the biggest joke Western democracy has ever created. ‘The use of the veto is morally indefensible and a dereliction of the United States’ duty to prevent atrocity crimes and uphold international law,’ said Agnès Callamard, Amnesty International’s Secretary General.
The U.S. has a long history of using its veto power to block any resolution that could harm the Israeli occupation. For example, the U.S. on October 8 vetoed a UNSC resolution calling for an immediate humanitarian ceasefire in Gaza.
The U.S. has vetoed resolutions for the sake of Israel many times; some of these include Israel’s invasion of southern Lebanon and its occupation of the Golan Heights.
