U.S. Cooler Heads startup receives FDA clearance to help save cancer patients’ hair

U.S.-based technology start-up Cooler Heads announced on Thursday it had received Food and Drug Administration (FDA) clearance to sell its revolutionary scalp cooling device (Amma Cap) to help cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy save their hair.

Amma portable cap can help many patients save all or most of their hair from falling out, which prevents the cancer-fighting chemicals from reaching hair follicles.

Julie Gralow, the chief medical officer and executive vice president of the American Society of Clinical Oncology, says that Cooler Heads is a smart product hitting the market at the right time.

Cooler Heads has raised about $1.4 million in seed round in 2019 which helped her to complete the prototype, a recent USA article highlighted its CEO Kate Dilligan announcement.

In December 2021, the Cooler Heads Amma cap had been cleared for commercialization by the FDA, allowing Dilligan to raise another $2.4 million in venture funding.

Dilligan hopes to get the word out that hair loss is not inevitable, and plans to make Cooler Heads the standard of care for eligible patients who want to avoid this highly visible, public, and devastating side effect of chemotherapy.

Cooler Heads has received accolades from leading industry participants, was a Top 5 finalist of MedTech Innovator Accelerator, won the 2020 Women Founders Network Fast Pitch.

Noteworthy, that the company was selected for membership in Stanford’s prestigious StartX community of serial entrepreneurs, industry experts, and well-funded growth stage start-ups.
