UAE’s EAD, MOCCAE, Al Futtaim sign MoU to reduce single use plastics on sideline of COP27

The Environment Agency-Abu Dhabi (EAD) has signed on Wednesday at the COP27 taking place in Sharm El-Sheikh, Egypt  a preliminary agreement with UAE Ministry of Climate Change and Environment (MOCCAE) and Majid Al Futtaim Retail to reduce single use plastics and shift to reusable alternatives.

The memorandum of understanding aims to enhance cooperation among the parties to further integrate sustainability in the public and private sectors and contribute to the conservation of natural resources and environmental protection.

The three parties share a set of guidelines to support UAE’s climate neutrality initiative by 2050. This includes encouraging consumption of low carbon footprint reusable products and alternatives.

They also will conduct studies on providing consumer incentives when it comes to purchasing environmentally friendly products.

“At MOCCAE, we are working together with our partners to apply an all-inclusive, sustainable and circular approach that ensures effective interventions along the full lifecycle of plastics,” said Essa Al Hashmi, assistant undersecretary for the sustainable communities sector at MOCCAE.

From his side, Shaikha Salem Al Dhaheri the Secretary General of EAD said, “Our goal is keeping in mind the bigger picture of the UAE’s vision of achieving climate neutrality through the UAE Net Zero by 2050 Strategic Initiative that was announced last year prior to COP26.”
