UK GDP contracts in April ’25

UK real gross domestic product (GDP) fell by 0.3 per cent in April 2025, reversing March’s 0.2 per cent growth, driven mainly by declines in services and production output, according to official data released on Thursday.

Despite the monthly drop, GDP grew by 0.7 per cent in the three months to April compared with the previous three-month period, largely supported by gains in the services sector.

Services output, which accounts for the majority of UK economic activity, declined by 0.4 per cent in April after rising 0.4 per cent in March. Production output contracted by 0.6 per cent, following a 0.7 per cent fall the previous month.

In contrast, construction output grew by 0.9 per cent in April, building on a 0.5 per cent increase in March, and rose by 0.5 per cent over the three-month period.
