Three oil tanks in Russia’s Kursk region ignited following a drone attack by Ukraine, according to acting regional Governor Alexei Smirnov on Sunday. While one tank’s fire was quickly contained without injuries, 82 firefighters and 32 equipment units were deployed to control the remaining blazes.
Russia’s defense ministry reported on Telegram that air defense systems neutralised two drones over the Kursk region. Smirnov added that the drones also damaged a couple of residential buildings, injuring one person.
Reuters has not independently verified these reports, and Ukraine has not commented. Both nations deny targeting civilians in the ongoing conflict, which began with Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. Kyiv states its strikes on Russia’s energy, military, and transport infrastructure are retaliatory measures against Moscow’s persistent attacks on Ukrainian territory.
