UK’s Starmer targets benefits bill with ‘radical reforms’
UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer has pledged to introduce “radical reforms” aimed at addressing the country’s rising benefits bill.
In an op-ed for the Mail on Sunday, Starmer emphasised the government’s commitment to tackling the increasing number of working-age individuals claiming health-related benefits or out of work due to long-term illness.
The surge in such claims, particularly among young people since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, has been attributed to mental health issues and lack of basic skills.
Secretary of State for Work and Pensions, Liz Kendall, echoed these concerns, stating that addressing the intersection of poor health, inadequate work, and skills shortages is crucial for boosting productivity and enabling people to build better lives.
Starmer’s government is under pressure to balance public spending while promoting economic growth as it navigates its first budget after returning to power.
