UN Chief at COP27: firms must stop net zero toxic cover-up
United Nations Secretary General Antonio Guterres warned on Tuesday the fossil fuel companies, that cover up massive emissions and he described it as a reprehensible attitude, during the 27th UN climate summit COP27.
Guterres further added, “this toxic cover-up could push our world over the climate cliff. The sham must end,” answering an expert report setting out decarbonisation pledge guidelines for firms, cities and regions.
The UN expert panel, convened by Guterres after UN climate talks in Glasgow last year, set its sights on drawing a red line around greenwashing in net zero targets from companies, cities and regions.
Since the Paris Agreement in 2015 set a global target of limiting temperature increases to 1.5 degrees Celsius (2.7 F) there’s been a groundswell of support for cutting greenhouse gas emissions and canceling out the rest, as the main way to meet that goal.
This means that global emissions must decline by at least 45 percent by 2030, and reach net zero by 2050.
