UREGNT: Egypt forms high-level committee to draft media sector reform roadmap

Egypt’s Prime Minister Moustafa Madbouly has ordered the formation of a national committee to develop a comprehensive roadmap for reforming and modernising the country’s media sector, the Cabinet said in a statement on Sunday.

The move follows directives from President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi to align Egyptian media with rapid global developments and enhance its national role.

The committee, chaired by the head of the Supreme Council for Media Regulation, will assess the current media landscape, identify key challenges, and define strategic objectives. It will also assign responsibilities to relevant institutions and experts for effective implementation.

The decision was made based on a proposal by the media council chief, in coordination with the heads of the National Media Authority and the National Press Authority.

Committee members include senior representatives from media institutions and syndicates, along with editors-in-chief, academics, and experts in journalism, digital media, artificial intelligence, and broadcasting. Prominent media figure Tarek Nour, chairman of United Media Services (UMS), is among the named members.

The committee is expected to submit a detailed report within two months to the prime minister, who will present it to the president. The report will include key findings, recommendations, and mechanisms for execution.

Specialised subcommittees may also be formed to deliver focused input within one month of their establishment, according to the statement.
