URGENT: US stocks fall sharply as Trump’s tariffs fuel fears of global trade war

US stocks tumbled sharply on Thursday, with major indexes plunging as President Trump’s sweeping tariffs stoked fears of an escalating trade war and raised concerns over a potential global economic recession.

At 10:23 ET, the Dow Jones Industrial Average sank 1,567 points, or 3.71 per cent, to 40,657.57. The broader S&P 500 fell 231.07 points, or 4.07 per cent, to 5,439.90, while the tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite lost 881.36 points, or 5.01 per cent, to 16,719.68.
