U.S. captures 55% of Egypt ready-made garment exports in 10 months

The United States has seized 55 percent of Egypt’s exports ready-made garments under the Qualifying Industrial Zones (QIZ) in the first ten months of 2015.

According to the General Organization for Exports and Import Control’s (GOIEC) monthly report, US’s imports of the Egyptian exports ready-made garments under the QIZ recorded approximately 4.7 billion Egyptian pounds (US$600.25 million) by end of October 2015.

The report also revealed that Egypt’s exports of ready-made garments rose to 8.6 billion pounds by October 2015, from 8.4 billion pounds in the same period a year earlier.

Meanwhile, exports to the European Union countries reached 2.4 billion pounds by the end of October 2015; while exports to the Arab world registered around 380 million, and to the rest of the world hit 877 million pounds, the report found.

Following the US, Britain ranked second in the list of Egypt’s top importers of ready-made garments in ten months. Britain has imported Egyptian ready-made garments estimated at 753 million pounds.

Turkey was in the third place importing Egyptian ready-made garments worth 706 million pounds, followed by Spain with imports worth 551 million pounds.

Moreover, the report showed that the informal wear topped Egypt’s ready-made garment exports, recording 3.1 billion pounds during January-October 2015. Coming second, the formal wear captured exports worth 3 billion pounds; while other ready-made garments reported 1.6 billion pound of exports.

Exports of sportswear hit 516 million pounds at end-October 2015, while children’s clothing registered 129 million pounds.
