Women make 42% of UAE aviation sector workforce

The aviation sector in the United Arab Emirates currently employs 27,000 women, representing 42 percent of the sector’s workforce, said Mervat Sultan, President of the Middle East Chapter of Women in Aviation on Wednesday.

Sultan’s remarks came during the Women in Aviation’s 10th Anniversary Conference, which is held during the 23rd Dubai Airport Show, mentioning that the number of women in the sector is on the rise.

“Women are participating in all aviation fields, not just exclusively as pilots, but also as engineers, air traffic controllers, and medical, technical and legal employees,” said Sultan.

More women are working in the industry as the engagement with the women interested in a career in the field are strong and constructive, Sultan added.

“The gap between men and women in the aviation field is still huge, and for that we need an effective road plan,” said Sheikha Mozah Al Maktoum, the first Lieutenant pilot with Dubai Police Air Wing.

Al Maktoum, who also the founder of women empowerment and support in aviation, Shehana, added that the plan aims to improve gender equality there is a need for collaboration of sponsors, government and organisations supporting women in aviation.

Boeing has been open about the taken steps to support gender equality in the workplace in the UAE. The company has joined  in 2022 15 companies in signing a pledge to accelerate the advancement of gender equality in the UAE’s workforce, said Kuljit Aura, Boeing Middle East, Turkiye and Africa President.
