A Giza criminal court on Sunday acquitted 27 Muslim Brotherhood members over charges of storming Awsim village police station following the dispersal of two pro-Mohamed Morsi sit-ins in Cairo in August 2013.
Among the acquitted defendants was Muslim Brotherhood leader Mahmoud Amer who was charged with planning and inciting the storming of the police station.
The authorities have detained thousands of alleged supporters of the now outlawed Muslim Brotherhood group since July 2013, and sentenced hundreds to death or life in jail, including former president Mohamed Morsi himself.
Morsi was ousted as president in July 2013 following mass protests against his one-year rule.
Morsi’s death sentence sparked widespread international criticism from human rights advocates as well as from Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, who was a strong supporter of the Islamist president.
Hundreds were killed when security forces crushed the pro-Morsi camps in Cairo’s Rabaa El-Adawiya Square and Giza’s Al-Nahda Square two years ago.
