Egypt, China discuss deepening railway co-operation

Egypt and China reaffirmed their commitment to collaboration in the railway sector during a meeting between the Egyptian Minister of Transport Kamel El-Wazir and Chinese Deputy Minister of Transport, Fai Dongbin, the Cabinet reported on Sunday.

They discussed joint co-operation on transport projects, including the 105.5 km light electric train (LRT) project with 19 stations. The first two phases of the project have been completed, while third and fourth phases are underway.

There is also a memorandum of understanding (MoU) for another LRT project connecting Rehab city and the New Administrative Capital (NAC), with the participation of Aviation Industry Corporation of China (AVIC).

El-Wazir emphasised the opportunity to localise the transport industry in Egypt. This proposal involves establishing a factory in Egypt to manufacture all types of rolling stock, including locomotives, railway cars, metro cars, and LRT cars.

Both countries are considering Chinese investment in managing and operating Egyptian railway lines. They also agreed on the significance of training Egyptian workers and engineers in Chinese institutions, a proposal supported by the Chinese representative.
