Ninety remote-controlled toy planes were seized by harbour police in Egypt’s Ain Sokhna port over fears they could be used for spying, state news agency MENA reported.
According to MENA, the investigation unit of harbour police received information an attempted smuggling of electronic devices in a toy container was underway, after which they searched four toy containers coming from China, and found the planes police say may be used for spying using video or photography.
The containers were held by police pending investigations by the Suez general prosecution.
Egypt’s General Security department of the interior ministry has banned remote control planes from entering the country for security reasons. Optical equipment such as optical telescopes and telescopic sites are also banned.
Many incidents of seizures of such devices were reported during the past year.
