Two Tremors Hit Egypt Friday Morning

Egypt was hit by two successive minor earthquakes on Friday morning, a geophysical official has said.

A  4.7–magnitude aftershock  occurred at 6:49 am CLT followed by another slighter tremor, almost two hours later, measuring 2 on the Richter scale, Hatem Ouda, head of the National Research Institute of Astronomy and Geophysics, told state news agency MENA.

With the epicenter in Greece–some 611km from Egypt’s northern border province of Marsa Matrouh and 958km from Helwan, south of Cairo, the shocks were largely unfelt in the early morning hours, Ouda said.

No damage or casualties have been reported.

A 5.8 magnitude earthquake that struck Cairo in October 1992 was the most destructive in the country’s modern history, killing more than 500 people, injuring thousands and displacing tens of thousands of others.
