Germany’s industrial production rises in June

Germany’s industrial production increased by 1.4 per cent in June 2024 compared to the previous month, according to provisional data released on Wednesday. This rise follows a revised 3.1 per cent decline in May.

However, the three-month comparison shows that overall production fell by 1.3 per cent in the second quarter of 2024 compared to the first quarter.

The automotive industry played a significant role in the positive June figures, with a production increase of 7.5 per cent after a steep 9.9 per cent decline in May.

The manufacture of electrical equipment also saw a rise of 5.2 per cent, contributing positively to the month’s performance. In contrast, the food industry experienced a 5.3 per cent drop in production, negatively impacting overall industrial output.

Excluding energy and construction, industrial production rose by 1.5 per cent in May. The production of capital goods and intermediate goods increased by 2.5 per cent and 2.1 per cent, respectively, while consumer goods production decreased by 2.4 per cent.

Energy production grew by 2.9 per cent, and construction production rose by 0.3 per cent in June.

On a year-on-year basis, industrial production, excluding energy and construction, was down 4.7 per cent in June 2024 compared to June 2023.

However, production in energy-intensive industrial branches rose by 1.4 per cent month-on-month and increased by 3.8 per cent compared to June 2023.
