EU announces new support for Ukraine’s winter energy security

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen announced new EU measures to bolster Ukraine’s energy security for the upcoming winter during a press conference with Fatih Birol, Executive Director of the International Energy Agency.

Von der Leyen highlighted the dire situation as Ukraine approaches 1,000 days since Russia’s full-scale invasion, which has devastated half of the country’s energy infrastructure.

To address these challenges, von der Leyen outlined a plan focusing on three key areas: repair, connect, and stabilise.

The EU will provide nearly €160 million in additional support, including €60 million for humanitarian aid such as shelters and heaters and approximately €100 million for repair works and renewable energy projects.

The aim is to meet Ukraine’s winter energy needs and enhance the resilience of its energy system long-term.
