Egypt collects EGP1.2b in electricity theft dues in 6 weeks

Egypt has collected 1.2 billion Egyptian pounds in unpaid dues over the last month and a half due to its efforts to address electricity theft, according to Minister of Electricity Mahmoud Esmat. The minister highlighted that these collections resulted from intensified measures, including reports filed against violators and the imposition of fines.

Esmat emphasised that the government is committed to continuing its efforts to curb electricity theft, a significant contributor to commercial losses in the sector. He noted that these actions are part of a broader strategy to enhance operational efficiency in the electricity network.

Additionally, Esmat underscored the ministry’s ongoing work to expand the installation of prepaid meters in various establishments, which plays a critical role in reducing losses and improving revenue collection. The installation of these meters is expected to help further mitigate electricity theft and ensure better management of electricity consumption across Egypt.
