Egypt prioritises gender equality in labour market

Egypt’s Minister of Manpower Mohamed Gobran emphasised the government’s commitment to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), integrating them into national plans and programmes.

During a meeting held with the National Council of Women’s (NCW) head, Gobran highlighted the ministry’s prioritisation of decent work for all, aligning with SDG 8 Decent Work and Economic Growth and SDG 5 Gender Equality.

Gobran emphasised that the Gender Equality and Women’s Economic Empowerment Unit aims to empower women economically and support their work-family balance, according to a Cabinet statement on Wednesday.

It also aims to eradicate workplace discrimination, provide equal opportunities, and enhance female employment through protective measures and safe working environments, the statement added.

The unit and its affiliates aim to ensure equality for all individuals covered by the labour law, playing a significant role in promoting gender equality within the private sector, the Cabinet’s report mentioned.

The discussion focused on the unit’s affiliates in different governorates, improving labour inspector capabilities, gender equality in occupational safety and health, international agreements, and labour law provisions.

These efforts aim to improve workplace conditions for women, including a gender-sensitive inspection guide and a national plan for workplace gender equality in collaboration with other ministries and organisations.
