UNSC Should Take Action To Stop Killings In Egypt: Arab HR Organization
The Arab Organization for Human Rights (AOHR) warned that General Abdel Fattah El-Sisi, the Egyptian army chief, could be tried internationally for excessive use of force against peaceful protesters.
The organization, based in the UK, sent an “urgent message” on Saturday to the president and members of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC).
AOHR said in a statement that the message “urges them to take practical steps to stop the targeting of peaceful protesters in various Egyptian cities by the security forces, the army and thugs.”
In a statement issued after the reported killing of dozens and wounding of thousands of civilian protesters in Cairo early Saturday, AOHR gave its message to the UN Security Council confirming that “General Abdel Fattah El-Sisi (Egyptian Defense Minister) developed a plan in collaboration with the Interior Ministry to eliminate the demonstrations and end the sit-ins, which are have been interfering with the takeover plan since the third of July.”
It also claims that there is evidence confirming “the involvement of the security forces and the army in the killings.”
The organization, which was established in 1993 by a group of human right activists, called on the council “to make a decision on the formation of committees to investigate all the events that have occurred since June 30th, and hold accountable all those responsible for the killings.”
It also advised the council to send observers to monitor movements of the security forces in the vicinity of the demonstrations.
AOHR confirms that El-Sisi and the leaders of the Ministry of Defence in collaboration with the Minister of Interior, Mohammed Ibrahim “would be internationally prosecuted after it had been proved that they were using deadly force and internationally banned weapons against the peaceful demonstrators in the squares and streets of Egypt at different times.”
The statement claims that “grave crimes were committed against the peaceful demonstrators.”
A large number of testimonies about “the war crimes committed in various places and dates” have been collected by AOHR, the statement said.
It called on all the victims of these crimes and witnesses to send their testimonies immediately to the office of the organization.
AOHR is a non-governmental organization. It promotes human rights in the world and advocates the rights of Arabs in particular.
