Egyptian Court Renews Custody Of Mubarak’s Sons On Corruption Charges

Egypt’s criminal court renewed Saturday the detention of Gamal and Alaa Mubarak, the sons of former president Hosni Mubarak, for 45 days in connection with corruption charges widely-known as the ‘presidential palaces’ case.

The brothers, along with the former president, are charged with squandering LE1.1 billion (roughly $0.16 billion) in public funds, and illicitly re-directing state funds allocated for the renovation of presidential palaces towards private residences.

In August, Mubarak’s sons were questioned by state security prosecutors over the aforementioned charges.

Gamal and Alaa remain in Cairo’s Tora prison on charges related to other corruption cases.

The ousted president’s sons have been accused of stock market manipulation regarding the 2007 sale of El-Watany Bank of Egypt to the National Bank of Kuwait.

They also await a court verdict on 19 December, along with the country’s former Prime Minister Ahmed Shafiq, regarding charges of the illegal sale of 40,000 square meters of land owned by the Association of Pilot Officers.
