53 Million Egyptians Are Registered Voters: CAPMAS

In statements to Al-Ahram’s Arabic news website, head of the Central Agency for Public Mobilisation and Statistics (CAPMAS) Major General Abu Bakr El-Guindy revealed that the current number of registered voters in Egypt is 53 million.

Presidential elections in Egypt are slated for 26 and 27 May.

El-Guindy denied allegations that the Egyptian military represents over 40 percent of the country’s economy, insisting that CAPMAS has no statistics regarding the army due to the institution’s “closed” nature.

He added that military investments spill into Egypt’s national economy, and that the army covers its own expenses. He also told Al-Ahram that the army markets some of its products and takes part in infrastructure projects.

El-Guindy also said the current rate of unemployment is 13.3 percent.
