A policeman was shot dead in the Upper Egypt governorate of Sohag in the early hours of Friday, state-owned news agency MENA reported.
Preliminary investigations suggest the motive behind the murder might be criminal and not political.
The man was shot while he was driving a motorbike back home from his job at Tahta police station in Sohag, some 500 kilometers south of Cairo.
His corpse, which bore signs of three gunshots, was found on a side road near the village of Kom Badar.
Hundreds of police personnel and troops have been killed over the past two years in attacks that began weeks after the July 2013 ouster of Islamist president Mohamed Morsi.
