Egypt will not intervene militarily in any neighbouring country, an Egyptian military source was quoted as saying by Egyptian state news agency MENA on Sunday.
The statement comes after Egyptian President Mohamed Morsi announced on Saturday that Egypt would sever diplomatic ties with Syria’s embattled government.
“The Egyptian people and army support the Syrian uprising,” Morsi asserted during his speech.
According to the military source quoted by MENA, the army’s responsibilities are confined to protecting Egypt’s internal and external security.
Egypt, he added, would not be drawn into conflicts in other countries or become entangled in regional rivalries.
Although Egypt participated in the 1991 US-led Gulf War against Saddam Hussein’s Iraq, it had been part of a 34-nation coalition sanctioned by the United Nations.
