Asia stocks rise on US tariff news

Asia-Pacific markets mostly rose after US President Donald Trump announced a 100 per cent tariff on semiconductor and chip imports, with exceptions for companies manufacturing in the US.

Japan’s Nikkei 225 benchmark increased 0.65 per cent to finish at 41,059.15, and the Topix rose 0.72 per cent to 2,987.92.

In South Korea, the Kospi index went up 0.92 per cent to close at 3,227.68, and the small-cap Kosdaq added 0.29 per cent to end the day at 805.81.

Hong Kong’s Hang Seng Index was 0.69 per cent higher at 25,081.63, while mainland China’s CSI 300 remained flat for the day.

Australia’s S&P/ASX 200 closed 0.14 per cent lower at 8,831.4, going against the broader trend.
