Australia’s jobless rate rises 0.1% in Jan. ’25

The Australian unemployment rate rose by 0.1 per cent to 4.1 per cent in January 2025, according to seasonally-adjusted data released by the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) on Thursday.

 “With employment rising by 44,000 people and the number of unemployed increasing by 23,000 people, the unemployment rate rose to 4.1 per cent,” Bjorn Jarvis, ABS head of labour statistics said.

The employment-to-population ratio reached a new record of 64.6 per cent, up by 0.1 percentage points. It was 0.8 percentage points higher than a year ago and 2.4 percentage points higher than pre-COVID levels, driven by an increase in the ratio for women.
