Beijing’s digital economy continued its rapid expansion in the first half of 2024, with added value surging 7.8 per cent year-on-year.
This outpaced the city’s overall GDP growth by 2.4 percentage points, underscoring the sector’s significant contribution to the economy.
The digital economy accounted for over 60 per cent of Beijing’s economic growth, driven by strong performances in information services and electronic manufacturing, which saw growth rates of 12.4 per cent and 20.1 per cent, respectively.
The city has made substantial progress in digital applications, with autonomous driving test mileage exceeding 28 million km by June. Additionally, Beijing boasts 74 internet hospitals and 254 medical institutions offering online services.
The digital economy’s robust growth is evident in other key indicators. Patent filings by major enterprises increased by 38 per cent, while investment in core digital industries surged by 32.5 per cent.
The city’s 5G network infrastructure is also impressive, with 122,000 base stations deployed, translating to 55 stations per 10,000 people.
Beijing’s commitment to technological innovation and digital transformation is driving its position as a leading force in the new economy.
