Bloomberg: Reeves to outline dire UK fiscal challenges
Chancellor of the Exchequer Rachel Reeves will deliver a pivotal speech on Monday to the House of Commons, highlighting the dire state of the UK’s public finances, according to an article by Bloomberg.
According to the writers, she is expected to describe the country as “broke and broken,” citing crises in housing, health, education, defence, transport, and migration, blaming the previous Conservative government and “populist politics.”
This address comes shortly after the Labour Party’s recent election victory, with Reeves under pressure to address the £20 billion ($25.7 billion) fiscal deficit.
Despite campaign promises not to significantly raise taxes, speculation is growing that the government may adjust capital gains and inheritance taxes to potentially raise £10 billion.
Environment Secretary Steve Reed stated that there are no plans to increase taxes for “working people” but acknowledged that the financial situation is worse than anticipated.
Reeves will also announce a forecast by the Office for Budget Responsibility and confirm the timing of the next budget and a multi-year spending review. A report from the Institute for Government warns that without significant changes, public services may deteriorate by the next election in 2028/29.
