China backs Sri Lanka debt relief efforts

China will maintain a positive role in the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and work with other creditors to help Sri Lanka achieve financial relief and debt sustainability, Reuters reported citing Xinhua news agency.

In a joint statement following a meeting between their presidents on Wednesday, the two countries expressed their commitment to expeditiously finalise a comprehensive China-Sri Lanka free trade agreement.

Their two central banks have extended a currency swap agreement and will maintain cooperation in the financial sector.
