The 28th Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP28) is set to support developing countries in green transition, said Egyptian Minister of International Cooperation Rania A. Al Mashat.
In a statement to the Emirates News Agency (WAM), Al Mashat said that this year’s edition, just like last year’s, comes in support of international efforts for climate action in the Arab region and the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region.
She highlighted that international reports shows that the MENA region is the most vulnerable to climate change risks, with 60 percent of the region’s population living in areas that suffer from water stress. Moreover, 20 million people could be displaced due to climate change, she added.
The minister also said that COP28 will include presentations for the most important results and joint action taken over a year within the National Platform for Green Projects (NWFE) programme.
She also took part in a series of COP28-related preparatory events to develop a roadmap to enhance climate action in the region.
The UAE will host COP28 from November 30 to December 12, 2023 at Expo City Dubai, as an important international platform to address the issue of climate change. COP28 will also go on with the international efforts of supporting developing countries which started by COP27’s Loss and Damage Fund.
