The Democratic National Convention has opened in the US city of Charlotte, with the American Democrats taking turns to attack their Republican rivals.
The Tuesday night event in Charlotte, the largest city in the US state of North Carolina, was reportedly marked by the strong presence of and appeal to the Latinos, women, and the youth.
The speakers warned their audience that Republican nominee Mitt Romney would take the country backward.
The speakers pointed to Romney’s wealth, his past record of ideas on issues such as abortion, and his party’s historic commitment to policies that would shrink government to the benefit of the richest Americans.
“Never in modern American history has a presidential candidate tried so hard to hide himself from the people he hopes to serve,” said Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid from Nevada about Romney.
“When you look at the one tax return he has released, it’s obvious why there’s been only one. We learned that he pays a lower tax rate than middle-class families. We learned he chose Swiss bank accounts and Cayman Island tax shelters over American institutions,” he said.
Furthermore, during the DNC’s opening event, which began just five days after the Republicans ended their convention, the speakers said that the audience needed to come out in force to reelect President Barack Obama despite the persistence of a troubled economy and high unemployment among other issues.
There has been plenty of evidence, according to national news reports in the US, of an underperforming economy, ranging from declined manufacturing activity for the third straight month to the government’s debt exceeding USD 16 trillion for the first time.
The development comes as polls have predicted a tight electoral race for the White House, quite certain to be decided by about 10 battleground states, where neither Obama nor his Republican rival Mitt Romney holds a clear advantage.
National public and private polls indicate that white Americans in general favor Romney over Obama.
Meanwhile, there was no end to the open calls by the Democratic figures for political donations to Obama’s re-election campaign, which is continuing to fall behind Romney in terms of cash on hand with each passing month.
“If you think Barack’s the right man for the job, please show your support with a donation of $5 or more today,” Obama’s wife, Michelle, said in emails to supporters about 90 minutes before her scheduled address to the convention on Tuesday night.
Moreover, police officers in Charlotte arrested 10 protesters demonstrating in the streets around the Democratic convention hall in what they said was a protest against US immigration regulations. The detainees were alleged to have been illegal immigrants themselves.
Romney, meanwhile, was in Vermont as the DNC event got underway, practicing for three upcoming debates in fall with Obama, which is deemed critical to the outcome of the November election.
