Disqualified parliamentary candidate wins 60 percent of votes in Alexandria

A disqualified candidate has won 60 percent of votes in a polling station in Alexandria in Egypt’s parliamentary elections after a committee overseeing the voting failed to remove his name from ballot papers in time.

Businessman Ali Elba got the majority of votes in a polling station in Al-Raml neighborhood in Egypt’s second-biggest city after he was disqualified from the parliamentary race by a court ruling.

“The problem is that the candidate was disqualified just one day before the elections and the ballot papers had already been printed,” Abdallah El-Khouli, head of the committee that supervises elections in Alexandria, told Ahram’s Arabic news website.

“All the votes which went to him will be considered void,” he added.

The first stage of Egypt’s long-delayed parliamentary elections took place on Sunday and Monday. The second stage will be held on 21 and 22 November.
