Egypt, China sign deal to launch Africa-focused agricultural research hub in Cairo

Egypt’s Desert Research Centre (DRC) on Wednesday signed a cooperation protocol with the Chinese Academy of Sciences’ affiliates – Wuhan Botanical Garden and Sino-Africa Joint Research Centre (SAJOREC) to deepen research collaboration, exchange expertise, and train African cadres.

According to a statement from the agriculture ministry, the agreement includes the launch of a regional office for SAJOREC at the DRC in Cairo, aimed at supporting sustainable development and boosting Egypt’s role as a gateway for agricultural cooperation across Africa.

Under the protocol, the two sides will cooperate on applied research in sustainable agriculture, natural resource conservation, and remote sensing, while promoting joint conferences, training programmes, and exchanging visits for scientists and postgraduate students.

Minister of Agriculture Alaa Farouk said the cooperation would also serve as a bridge to localise advanced Chinese agricultural technologies in Egypt, particularly those addressing climate change and water scarcity.
