Egypt drafts ceasefire resolution to UN General Assembly

Egypt’s mission to the United Nations shared on Monday the text of a draft UN General Assembly resolution calling for an immediate humanitarian ceasefire in Gaza.

“This bloodshed must stop immediately,” Egypt’s UN representative, Osama Abdel Khalek, said on X.

The General Assembly resolution brought forth by Egypt is using the same language to a Security Council resolution vetoed by the US on Friday.

In the resolution, both Egypt and Mauritania call for the activation of article 377 “Uniting for Peace.”

The article was formed in 1950 to allow the 193-member UNGA to act where the Security Council (UNSC) has failed in maintaining world peace and security.

The new resolution is set to go to a vote on Tuesday.
