Egypt, EBRD explore expanding energy partnership to mining cooperation

Egypt and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) are exploring ways to broaden their strategic partnership in the energy sector to include mining cooperation, the petroleum ministry said on Tuesday.

The talks took place on the sidelines of the Energy Intelligence Forum 2025 between Petroleum Minister Karim Badawy, Natalia Lacorzana, EBRD’s Global Head of Natural Resources, and Gianpiero Nacci, the bank’s Managing Director for Climate Strategy and Delivery.

Discussions focused on Egypt’s ongoing mining sector reforms aimed at improving the investment climate, including a planned aerial and geophysical survey project for mineral exploration identified as a potential area of collaboration with the EBRD.

The two sides also discussed joint efforts on energy efficiency, decarbonisation, sustainable aviation fuels, electric vehicles, and methane emissions reduction.
