Egypt, Greece lookup for int’l consultant for joint power linkage project – minister

Egypt’s Electricity Ministry is looking for an international consultancy office to conduct the technical and economic feasibility study for the joint power linkage project, in coordination with Greek side, said minister Mohamed Shaker on Sunday.

The electricity interconnection project can exchange about 2,000 megawatts between Egypt and Greece, Shaker added in the State Information Service’s statement.

He further added that an agreement was held with a Belgian company to discuss installing underwater power cables between the two countries.

There is a growing European interest in power linkage projects with Egypt given the country’s abundance of renewable energy resources at a time Europe is looking for alternatives to Russian gas.

Noteworthy, that the interconnection project with Saudi Arabia has finalised about 87 percent of the aerial power line stretching between Badr and Taba.

Despite global challenges and the current disruption in supply chain, efforts are under way to finalize the first 1,500 megawatt by May 2025 and another 500 megawatt by November 2025.
