Egypt increases household electricity prices by 19.1%

The Egyptian Ministry of Electricity announced the new electricity prices for households rising prices for household consumers by 19.1% starting from the beginning of July, minister of electricity Mohamed Shaker said in a press conference on Tuesday.

Here is a breakdown on prices of electricty for households during fiscal year 2020/2021:

For household consumers, the 0-50 kilowatt (KW) consumption bracket will pay EGP 0.38 per KW, up from EGP 0.30,

While the 51-100 KW consumption bracket will pay EGP 0.48 per KW instead of EGP 0.40.

Third bracket of 0-200 KW consumption will pay  EGP 65 per KW, while the fourth with 201-350 will pay EGP 96 per KW.

For the fifth bracket 351-650 KW will pay EGP118 per KW, however the sixth bracket of 651-one thousand KW will pay EGP140.

Seventh bracket of more than 1,000 kilowatts will not be covered with subsidies and will pay EGP 145 per KW

However, the government decided to extend the subsidies for three more years ending in fiscal year 2024/2025 instead of a previous plan to end subsidies in FY21/22 due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, Shaker added.
